The book tells the story of a boring average guy living a mundane life in a boring village. There is a castle near this village, that the protagonist wants to reach yet, despite his best efforts, he cant reach it no matter what. The castl represents something divine, something above his current state of life, something so close yet so far. A life of constant endeavor trying to attain what is better, but all efforts are in vain, for what he does is meaningless.
It's basically like incels trying to get their oneitis. You are so close to her when you meet each other but her hear is very far away sadly. And you can try all you want, nothing works because there is a gap between what you look like and what she finds attractive that you cannot close. You can live your whole life trying different approaches, "improving" yourself but you will never get where you want due to looks. Its just a few mms of bone between you and an attractive girl yet the distance is endless really.
I think the writter of Berserk also took inspiration from this novel since Griffith, when he was young, lived near a castle that he dreamed of going to yet never was able reach. The castle is a represenation of dreams and hopes that the man cannot achieve as he is. Griffith had to be reincarnated and transform into something else to get to his goal, just like incels need to.
