A single gram of uranium-235 can release about 20 billion calories (or 20 million kilocalories) of energy through nuclear fission. However, humans cannot extract these calories because our bodies lack the ability to perform nuclear fission; it would also be fatal to ingest, as it is highly toxic and radioactive.
