Full Minoxidil Guide +my own results and experiences

What is Minoxidil at all and how does it work?
Minoxidil is a drug originally developed to treat high blood pressure, but today it is primarily used to treat hair loss and promote hair growth.

How it works:

• Vasodilation: It improves blood flow to the scalp by dilating blood vessels.
• Nutrient delivery: Improved blood flow allows more nutrients and oxygen to reach the hair follicles.
• Growth cycle: It extends the growth phase of hair and can enlarge shrunken follicles, resulting in thicker hair regrowth.

Oral vs Topical Minoxidil
When choosing between topical and oral minoxidil, there are advantages to both. The classic (topical) solution or foam scores points for its targeted application directly to the hair follicle which means that side effects are almost exclusively limited to the application site (such as itching or dandruff). However, many users dislike having to apply something to their body every day or complain about greasy residue in their hair.

In contrast, oral administration offers significantly greater convenience and is often more effective for people who, for example, lack the necessary enzyme on their skin to utilize topical minoxidil. However, since the tablet acts throughout the body via the bloodstream, the risk of systemic side effects such as rapid heartbeat, fluid retention, or unwanted hair growth in certain areas increases. While the topical version is usually available without a prescription, oral therapy, due to the strain on the cardiovascular system, generally requires a doctor's prescription and monitoring. In my opinion, both are viable options, but I opted for the topical form of minoxidil and have achieved very good results with it.

Taking topical minoxidil
I would recommend using it twice a day with a minimum of 8 hours in between. If you like, you can also use a derma roller on some days, but I've had good results without it. You can simply apply it to your fingers and then, for example, apply it to the desired areas on your face where you want hair to grow. Afterwards, just wash your hands and that's it. The minoxidil takes about 4 hours to be completely absorbed, but most of it is absorbed after 2 hours. I would avoid exercise for the first 2 hours after application. Caution: If you have pets‼️be especially careful, as minoxidil is toxic to them.

Taking oral minoxidil
Oral minoxidil is taken once daily as a tablet, usually regardless of meals. Unfortunately, I have no personal experience with this.

What else you should know
Patience is key. Nothing happens overnight. Progress will come, but very slowly. It can take anywhere from 6 to 12 months. If you don't see much of a difference after 2 months, that's perfectly normal. I noticed significantly more hair growth after 3 months. At the beginning, when you start using Minoxidil, you might experience some hair loss, but don't worry, it's only temporary. This is simply a sign that old hairs are falling out and new ones are growing in. I made the same mistake in 2023, I started, saw nothing after 2 months, and then stopped.

With eyebrows in most cases, the hair growth stimulated by minoxidil is not permanent once you stop using it. This is because minoxidil stimulates the hair follicles but generally doesn't fundamentally change their biological properties. As soon as minoxidil is discontinued, many of the newly grown hairs fall out after some time because the follicles revert to their original state.
However there are exceptions where the results on the eyebrows remain even after discontinuing Minoxidil. With beards the results usually persist even after stopping Minoxidil due to hormonal factors. If youre using minoxidil, don't shave at all. Minoxidil will cause many tiny baby hairs to sprout at first (those very thin, white ones), and over time they will become darker and thicker. Shaving would slow down this progress. To be perfectly honest, I would use it on my eyebrows and scalp continuously. I do it myself. The results are 100% worth it. And let's be honest, it's affordable. I pay maybe 20-30€ a year for my minoxidil. Everyone talks about side effects but most people don't even notice any. I honestly didn't notice anything.

so did you apply it on your eyelash too, i heard it migrates to the eyelash if applied near eye area. Also you noted that you did not noticed any side effect, some people say they observe fat loss near the eye but i guess that happens in few people or after usage for a very long time. And do you have any experience with LATTISE?

No I didn't apply it to my eyelashes. My eyelashes are naturally very long and dark,so I have no need for that. I haven't used Latisse before. I also didn't notice any loss of fat

No I didn't put it on my eyelashes and I didn't notice any growth. Theoretically you could put it on your eyelashes of course, but you have to be extremely careful that it doesn't run into your eyes. For eyelashes, I'd recommend Latisse instead, I'm starting with that soon myself.

Sorry for the late reply. With products like these, the order doesnt matter. The important thing is to leave enough time between applications. I wouldn't apply minoxidil directly after sunscreen, for example, because it's not directly on the skin then, there's a layer of sunscreen on it. I would simply wash my face briefly with water before applying the minoxidil, wait until it's dry, and then apply the minoxidil. I would always leave at least an hour between applications just to be on the safe side.
personal example: I also use topical tretinoin, and with that, I also increase the intervals between applications. (+3 hours in this case, but a huge gap like this is not necessary in your scenario)

Also wanted to know what you think of this routine. It's the one i'm currently doing: minoxidil 3 hours before sleeping, applied with gloves and cotton bud (i have a dog so want skin contact to be minimal) and i apply a thin layer over eyebrows. then i wash my hands well. Then when washing my face in the morning is there any risk in residue coming into contact with the eye eye area? I close my eyes tightly just in case.

Your routine isn't bad, but it can definitely be improved. First of all, you're worrying way too much. Gloves and cotton swabs for application are overkill. Just wash your hands thoroughly and long afterward, and that's it. Your dog just shouldn't touch your face. And you don't need to worry about residue the next morning; minoxidil is completely absorbed after four hours at the latest, and most of it even after two hours or less. There's absolutely nothing left the next morning. I've gotten pure minoxidil in my eyes several times, and apart from a burning feeling, nothing usually happens. If I were you, I'd use minoxidil twice a day, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. (In areas where you're prone to acne, like your upper lip, once a day is the better choice.)

So here are some recent pictures. Unfortunately, the quality of the eyebrow picture isn't great because I can only take pictures with my iPad. Sorry again. You can't really see everything very well. In any case, there's definitely more hair growing on the sides, but I'm still shaving it off because it looks unkempt. My progress and posts on this topic will also be less frequent now because I'm also taking isotretinoin and therefore have to adjust my minoxidil use. (I'm only using it once in the morning now and will most likely switch to alcohol-free minoxidil so that my skin doesn't dry out unnecessarily.)

ah yes you can definitely see the progress, most definitely in the beard. I actually started using tretinoin (0.05%), i know isotret is more for severe acne but is there any risk of using both. i've done research and not seen anything about risk of dual use. also appreciate your reply

No problem bro. With using both, do you mean Minoxidil + Isotretinoin, or something else? If so, there aren't any serious interactions, it just means your skin might dry out more, which is why I reduced my Minoxidil use. I'm going to do a big Isotretinoin guide here on org in the next few days anyway.

yea it works so well. it completely cleared up my skin along with benzonyl peroxide a few years ago so i hopped back on last week and the improvements are very noticable. also how did you deal with flaking or dry skin on your eyebrows? I try using moisturiser but i still have a bit. it's not an excessive amount, just looks a bit unclean.

My eyebrows are never dry or flaky, and I also don't have a specific routine for them. I think they just get cared for with while im doing my isotretinoin skincare routine. Here's my routine copied from my post about isotretinoin: Wash your face morning and night with a mild face wash. The face wash shouldn't contain any additional acne medication. Then apply a moisturizer. Again, avoid creams with acne-fighting ingredients. Use Vaseline or lip balm on your lips. When you're outdoors, apply a low-fat sunscreen with SPF 50 to your face. Reapply the cream and the petroleum jelly or lip balm before bed. It's also a good idea to always have hand cream with you. (That's also my only skincare routine at the moment.) Maybe you can adopt some of these tips. Try applying creams overnight, or dye your eyebrows, then it will be less noticeable.

After reaching desired growth/density for the eyebrows can you taper it down to say 1-2 times a week to maintain results or would daily application still be required.

I'd say that's too infrequent. Especially once a week definitely won't work. You'll see that when you look at the half-life. But you could try every second day and look how it goes.

Thank you so much for explaining everything in detail. I have a few questions I'd like to ask:
1-) It's said that when minoxidil is applied to the hair, it initially causes hair loss, but then it repairs the hair. Is this also true for eyebrows? Will it cause eyebrow loss when I first use it?
2-) Can I apply it to my eyelashes? And if so, can I apply it to my eyelashes after putting a drop of minoxidil on my finger and closing my eyes?

No problem, youre welcome. Before I started using Minoxidil, I did some research, it is indeed possible that you might lose a few eyebrow hairs. But to be honest with you, I personally didn't notice anything at all. And even if you do happen to lose a few hairs, the results are absolutely worth it. As for your second question: yes, theoretically it is possible, but you really have to be extremely careful, but though no matter how careful you are, some of it almost always ends up getting in

My own results
In the attached pictures you can see my results after 3 months; I started last year.

For the first 20 minutes after application, the areas where you applied it look a bit wet, but after that, you usually don't notice anything anymore.
