Gaining sentience was the worst evolutionary trait humans ever developed. For a species so dependent on genetics, becoming self-aware was a curse. We're smart enough to realize how much our looks and genetics control our lives but we can't change most of it. We see the hierarchy, we feel the difference, but we're stuck with what we were born with. Sentience didn’t free us. It just made us painfully aware of how little control we actually have.
