Growth plates are made of cartilage cells (chondrocytes) that first divide and then gradually turn into bone tissue. Vitamin D raises calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood and stimulates osteoblast activity, which promotes the conversion of cartilage into bone. When this process happens too quickly, the cartilage in the growth plate is replaced by bone faster, causing the growth plates to ossify and close earlier.
