Scientific research has found a link between malnourished parents and shorter adult height in their offspring. Malnutrition and stunting is now recognised as an intergenerational cycle
A malnourished mother will give birth to a low birth weight baby; the low birth weight baby will grow as a malnourished child, then to a malnourished teenager, then to a malnourished pregnant woman, and so the cycle continues
What’s worse is that even if the mother regains weight, her child will still end up with a shorter height. Stunting and disease can be passed onto offspring
This is commonly seen in countries that have recently suffered from severe famines, food shortages, war etc
For example during the Black Death, up to a 1/3 of Europe’s population died from the plague
Analysis of skeletal remains of people who grew up during the Black Death (14th century) showed that they were on average nearly 5cm shorter than people who grew up before the plague
