Genetics are obviously the most important factor in determining how you look, but they control so much more. Your health, lifespan, mental health, demeanor, and much more are primarily dependent on the genetics that were assigned to you. Some are gifted with a good deal, and others are cursed with a package of traits that will doom them throughout their life
I also believe that they have a feedback loop. What I mean by this is, good genetics attract good genetics, while poor genetics are forced to settle with poor genetics. A poor, mentally ill, ugly man will have to settle with a genetically unfortunate woman, while an extremely attractive woman will have kids with an attractive, NT, healthy man. So you can really get tons of advantages, just as easily as you can get tons of disadvantages.
I've bitched and complained on here enough about my looks, but to briefly recap, I genetically inherited a poor facial structure where basically every ratio is off, recession, the frame of a prepubescent boy, and many more failos. I'm even dealing with some pretty serious hair loss at the age of 17. But that might be the least of my worries when it comes to the cards I've been dealt. My health is absolutely terrible, and will only get worse. I have so many issues in every system of my body that I've dealt with from my birth, and will deal with more and more as I go through my life. I have severe vision loss and other eye issues, frequently get stomach issues, and already have hypertension. These are all things that run in my family. Early death from heart issues also run heavily in both sides of my family, so I will likely deal with strokes, heart attacks, heart disease, etc by 50. Skin cancer as well. And as far as mental health, I suspect both of my parents are mildly ND, and most of my male relatives are ND, and depression + anxiety is common on one side, while anger issues are common on the other. Basically, I inherited from both sides a shitty hand for my life. It's absolutely brutal. Looks might even be the least of your worries if you are lucky enough to inherit a shitty enough hand.
