I get better more realistic photos on my shitty phone camera when I zoom in on it like 2x, at 1x my face and body just get stretched too much. The video camera also looks much better/true to reality. So I guess maybe your phone camera possibly semi-sucks like mine. Front camera photos I think generally make everyone look a lot more ugly than what they really are though, so that's to be expected for ex.
