To preface this I'm 178cm morning height, so functionally ~5'9.5 (177cm) maybe even 5'9 if my posture is kinda fucked

So she was at my place and we were talking about the last movie we watched, the newest top gun and Tom Cruise, we started talking about his height n height in general etc which in hindsight was a real bad idea. Because at some point she says
"I wish you were taller" <--- Her exact fucking words
as soon as I heard that I felt my heart start beating hard and fast, like legit primal fight or flight response JFL
And then I said
"Well you should be glad I'm the height I am"
"Why?"
"Because if I was taller I wouldn't have to settle for you"
Then I scampered off for a smoke

I fucked up so bad bros. Why didn't I just play it cool and say "Yeah whatever" or "It is what it is" or some shit instead of saying the first cringe catty remark I could come up with, proving to her that I'm insecure about it and what she just said touched a nerve.
But also it's her fault for even saying some shit like that, that'd be like if I out of nowhere said "I wish your tits were bigger" but 10x worse.
Either way I do feel like if that initial comment comes out you're fucked no matter what. You can either do nothing and be a pushover, or do something in response but then you're seen as insecure n defensive.
