MY TAKE ON THE LINK BETWEEN TECHNOLOGY USAGE AND DEVELOPMENT IN CHILDREN
Like many children, I was given an iPad before I could even walk. I spent hundreds of hours mindlessly watching content, which turned me into a low-IQ zombie. As I grew older and started using the internet more independently, I saw some extremely disturbing things online at around 10 years old — experiences I might never fully recover from. Thankfully, I was forced into sports, which I believe all children should be encouraged to do. At least I became physically fit. In Taiwan, iPhone usage among very young children has become so concerning that children under the age of two are now prohibited from using any type of electronic gadget, a policy I think is a step in the right direction. Parents should absolutely monitor their children’s screen time and what they’re watching. I recently watched a documentary that truly opened my eyes to how naïve some parents are about the dangers of the internet. I’m not completely against giving kids technology, it is the future, but people need to wake up to how dangerous the internet can be, especially for children.
TL;DR: The internet is useful, but it can be very dangerous for kids. Parents should monitor what their children are doing online.
