Yes, I've wondered that too and it's a good question. I'm not a preacher, but to my understanding it all goes back to the first man Adam. In the paradise there was no evil, but Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and thus all things bad were introduced to humanity. We had a choice, paradise or evil world and we chose the evil world and sin.
Lucifer was not created evil either, he was created as the perfect angel of God, but he grew proud of his position in heaven and thought he should take God's place. He lead a rebellion against God with a third of all angels in heaven, but lost. They were thrown out of heaven, and these fallen angels became demons with a destiny of hellfire. All they can do now is try to drag the humanity to hell with them, because they hate God, and God loves humanity, so they hate humanity too. And hell was never made for humanity, it was made for Lucifer and his demons, but there is no other place for a soul go if they refuse God. What makes hell so terrible is separation from God. On earth and in heaven God is with us wherever we go, but not in hell where it is known the damned souls pray for forgiveness but are not heard. It's no place for mankind.
God also sometimes does things we cannot understand, that may seem evil, but they have noble goals. Shaping us into better men or the world in to a better place.
