The godfather has Sonny’s death vito and Michael’s loss of innocence.
The godfather two has Michael and his father’s descent into crime.
They are equals, but one might prefer one to another due to an emotional connection or variance. It’s like how people compare Chico to Barrett they are equal in terms of looks and which one you prefer is only personal preference and not objectively better or worse.

Part 2 hit me a lot harder emotionally, particularly at the end with the family Vito built up being contrasted to the isolated and bitter Michael after ruthlessly tearing apart everything Vito built because of his inability to forgive anyone. That scene at the end with him in the house as the final hit is orchestrated on the boat is cold af.
