In the beginning, the Lord created many things.
Then he created Man. The image of Himself. And created the first woman from the man’s rib.
He set them in the garden of eden to watch over it and watch over all the animals of the world and give glory to God.
But, something else God created caused a schism in the relationship between Man and God. God put the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
For years, many wondered, “why did God create this tree in the first place? Why not just leave Adam and Eve in peace. Why cause tension by creating this tree?”
People claim that Adam and Eve willfully disobeyed God. But, how would they have known what “disobey” even means? Right and wrong weren’t known concepts to them. They couldn’t distinguish between evil and good, right and wrong, beautiful and ugly, sadness and happiness, etc etc. All they knew was the joy God gave them. They had nothing to compare it to. So this Tree was not only a tree of “Evil and Good”, it was a tree of opposites. It was a Tree which revealed the contrasts to that which was known.
So, again, why would an all knowing, all loving God create this tree?
There’s only one reason; it’s creation was important for the ultimate salvation of mankind. You see, Adam and Eve were always destined to fall away from God. How else can God be glorified if his only two sentient beings are completely ignorant on the idea of good and bad. How can God be praised by these two beings who had no other choice but to praise him?
When Eve ate the Forbidden Fruit, all knowledge was flowing, like a waterfall. Now, the two knew the differences between wrong and right. God banished the two from the Garden. And they finally knew the opposite of happiness, sadness. And they knew the opposite of beauty, ugliness.
And remember, the Tree itself wasn’t evil. It was the disobedience that was evil.
Cast out and alone, the two are filled with guilt for their transgressions. But, God gives them another “chance”. This “chance” was always the way it was supposed to be. In order for mankind to persist, they had to have knowledgeable information on consequences and knowing right form wrong. In order for God’s ultimate plan, Jesus, to work out, man had to be aware of his choices and the consequences of his choices.
God knew what would happen. Awareness is both troubling but also blessed. With the initial fall of mankind out of the way, human beings finally had a choice. They could now choose to worship and follow God. Or they could easily choose not to.
Some say, God set us up for failure, but that isn’t true. God simply knows what will happen, but He doesn’t “set it up”. Do you think Jesus set Judas up for betrayal? He knew he was a devil from the beginning and predicted it, but Judas acted voluntarily without coercion.
So, to sum it all up, God created man. But, wanting man to choose to love Him, He gave them the Tree. This opened their eyes and now we have an understanding of what’s good and what isn’t good. And we can now love God without it being “planned” as if we are robots. And the Sin of Man is no longer forgiven by offerings of animals. The true Lamb of God, Jesus, came into this world as a sacrifice. No more animal bloodshed to atone,
And now we have a choice between God and Evil. And all glory is indeed given to God. So, His plan for us wasn’t “failure”, it was redemption.
Jesus is sometimes called the Last Adam. Let’s look at the similarities between the two:
Jesus is the ultimate plan. He is the one to save us. He is the one to deliver us. The only one who could have ever saved us from ourselves.
