I go hiking in the NH in the summer. I have done all the longest and most difficult single day hikes (Mt. Washington, Mt. Mousilock, Mt Layfayettee, etc.) with just a water bottle, a hat, shorts and hiking shoes. No backpack, no food, no whatever else people carry in their backpacks. I do spray on some bug spray before hand. I don't know why almost everyone else feels the need to carry a bunch of food and gear around with them.
