Here's a very good Japanese film I found on youtube. It was made in 1937 and takes place in the Edo period (18th century Tokyo).

I love these kinds of films.

Yeah, I love old black and white Samurai Westerns. 7 Samurai, Sword of Doom, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Harakiri, etc.

If it could be done I'd learn Japanese just so I could watch these films without the subtitles.

Kanji's definitely the hardest.

You should get Rosetta Stone if you're new to learning languages (haven't reached fluency in a foreign language). It won't make you fluent, but it will teach you how to approach language learning and give you a rock solid foundation for Japamese.
