mitochondria have receptors, regulate nucleus (apoptosis and much more), passed on by mothers in all animals for 1. sperm mitochondrial DNA is heavily damaged and 2. deliberate genetic mechanism to prevent paternal mitochondrion dna being passed one. if mitochondria from sperm are passed on, the offspring has pretty bad health issues (experimentally in c. elegans and in a case of a human). mitochondrial dna can break off and incorportate into nuclear dna, linked to neuron dysfunction and ageing, can become transposons apparently
