The main thing is that people lack self awareness that they are below average or ugly. Softmaxxing is legit for people who are average+ and few are willing to admit they are beneath that. A lot of it is because other people lie to each other so fucking much

For example, I used to believe I was slightly above average because I could slay on tinder, had cute girlfriends and would get complimented on my looks

But in truth slaying is easy so long as you're not ultra deformed, take shitty pics or are very short (I'm talking average looking women here, obv slaying very gl women is different)

Literally everyone can get a girlfriend

Then everyone can lie to you about being handsome, it's just a word, anyone can call you handsome and not mean it

Most people are way uglier than they think, there are multiple stages of coping. I used to think that I was above average, realized I was average, realized no I'm not average, I'm below average and then realized I'm just straight up ugly
