The Sopranos Guide to Expressing Your Emotions
Why explain what you feel when a “heh,”
“oof,” or “madonn’” can do the job?
1. Surprise
“OHHH?”
Raise the pitch at the end. Eyes widen slightly.
Someone: “He bought a race horse.”
You: OHHH!
2. Realization
“Ohhh…”
Slow, low, drawn-out.
Meaning: Ah. Now I understand.
3. Disbelief
“Get the fuck outta here.”
Not necessarily an instruction.
It means:
There is no way you're telling me this is true.
4. Sympathy
“Oof…”
Quietly. Slightly shake your head.
“His transmission died.”
“Oof…”
You have acknowledged his suffering.
5. Skepticism
“ Oh Yeah?”
Raise one eyebrow.
You're not asking whether they're correct.
You're asking them to continue defending their increasingly questionable position.
6. Genuine amusement
“Heh heh heh…”
Let it build naturally.
Optional head-down posture.
7. Mockery
“Ohhh, look at this guy…”
Stretch the ohhh.
Follow it with an exaggerated imitation of whatever the person just did.
8. Annoyance
“Ahhh, Jesus…”
Long exhale.
Close your eyes for approximately one second.
You've reached your daily limit for dealing with other people.
9. Shock
“WHAT THE FUCK.”
Say it immediately.
Don't overact it. The suddenness makes it work.
10. Resignation
“Whaddaya gonna do?”
Shoulder shrug.
Palms slightly upward.
This is less a question than an entire philosophy of life.
