Before you get into a gun fight, make sure you have 30+ rounds of ammo. But once you're in one, obviously take cover and start shooting from behind cover into the general direction of the perpetrator. This is called suppressive fire. The military uses this strategy.
Now once you start firing your opponent is gonna duck/get behind cover, that's when you have the choice to either: retreat or get someone else to push up on him and neutralize him/them.
It's useful knowing this in case your house gets raided by vandals and your rightfully defending your property.
