I am currently in between skinny and fat by a little. Do I gain muscle first or immediately try to go lean?

It's hard to gain muscle in a calorie deficit.
If you are not bloatmaxxed and just skinny fat I would keep the calories in a small surplus and train hard.
If you cut immediately you won't be able to build muscle effectively + you will just look skinny.
