Hair loss is not something everyone worries about, but for a lot of men it can be a major issue. What is the point of building a big physique, thickening your facial bone mass, and achieving the face you want if your hair ends up looking bad? That pushed me to look for the best possible solution—one that would both slow hair loss and support regrowth.

Here is what I found, ranked in order of importance:

1. Dutasteride
Originally developed to treat prostate enlargement, dutasteride turned out to be even more effective than finasteride for hair regrowth. Scientifically, the main difference is that dutasteride inhibits both type 1 and type 2 5-alpha-reductase, which lowers DHT more broadly than finasteride. Because type 1 is highly active in sebaceous glands in the skin, including the scalp, blocking it can reduce DHT locally in the skin. This is why dutasteride may have a stronger effect on androgen-driven oil production and acne compared to finasteride, although it will not completely “block” all androgen effects.

2. Finasteride
Finasteride is one of the best-known hair-loss prevention and regrowth treatments. It is mainly a type 2 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, so it has a narrower effect than dutasteride and less impact on the type 1 (skin/sebaceous gland) pathway. A common dose is 1 mg daily, and many people start seeing results after 6 to 12 months. If dutasteride is not an option, finasteride is still a solid choice.

3. Minoxidil
Minoxidil is widely used and easy to get. It comes in both topical and tablet form, although the topical version is more common. Many topical formulas contain alcohol or similar ingredients that can leave the hair feeling dry, stiff, or negatively affect its texture (not worth it imo). It is typically applied twice a day, and many people use it after morning and post-workout showers as sweat lowers its affinity. It can support hair growth at the scalp level alongside DHT-blocking treatments.

4. Nizoral shampoo
Ketoconazole, the active ingredient in Nizoral, may have mild anti-androgen effects. Using it once a week can be a useful extra step in a hair-care routine.

Before finishing, for context: I’m currently planning my first cycle. Right now I’m running 2.5 mg oral minoxidil and 1 mg finasteride daily. If I go on cycle, I would switch to dutasteride due to its broader inhibition of type 1 and type 2 5-alpha-reductase. By targeting both enzymes, dutasteride reduces DHT more effectively in the skin, where type 1 activity is higher, which can help lower androgen-driven effects like excess oil production and acne during a cycle, although it won’t eliminate them completely.

This routine is not difficult to maintain, and it can produce strong results over time. In my experience, I went from worrying about hair loss to seeing improvement. The key is patience, because these treatments usually take several months before any real changes show up. If you stay consistent for 6 months to 2 years, the results can be significant, or at the very least help stop further loss.

I would Implore you to research the side affects but do NOT fall to fear mongering as side affects are rare and low to majority of people. You could always hop off if you don’t like any side affects but you’ll never know if you get any if you don’t try.

This assumes you are also taking care of nutrition, hydration, and sleep.
