Haplogroup (or haplo for short) is a genetic family branch that traces ancestral line.
(In this thread, ill be mostly referring to Y-DNA line of haplogroups)
how its passed down:
Haplo's passed down from your parents, more specifically:
Y-DNA haplogroup (from your father) - only to male kids.
mtDNA (from your mother) - to all kids, but only daughters pass it onwards.
a haplogroup can tell you:
where one's ancient ancestral line likely came from.
how that line migrated over thousands of years.
which populations share distant ancestry with that line.
haplogroups are usually branched, for example: J1 or J2, G1 or G2, R1b or R1a.
these branched haplogroups are related further up the line of ancestry, diverging up to several tens of thousands of years ago.
Haplogroups can be of a very important use to understanding relations between several different ethnic groups. Same haplogroups indicate that at some point in time, they were closely related.
They're also usually clustered in one group of population or region, however differences are still common and haplogroup can't be used as a proof of one's ethnicity of nationality.
important to know:
Haplogroups have almost NOTHING to do with your looks or physical appearance (only accounting for 1% of your physical appearance). Different ethnicities can also share common haplogroups, however they can have different phenotypes and share almost no physical resemblance between one another; However, they still can be an indication of some shared ancestry at some point in the past.
an Ethnic group could easily be made up of several lines of Y DNA haplos, especially in intermixed regions such as caucasus or balkans.
Common Y-DNA haplogroups include:
R1b (Seen in western countries and armenia), R1a (Seen in eastern europe, predominantly in slavic nations), O2 (east asia), J1 (southern middle east/excluding north africa), J2 (northern middle east), E (Predominantly seen in africa), G2 (Seen in native caucasians).
