I guess there is a difference between hate/not liking someone that people mix up, me including.

I have conversations with maybe 5-6 "friends" a day, yet I don't like any of them. I wouldn't piss on fire to put them out. I've one real friend that I genuinely have a real friendship with.

What would you consider that "feeling", then? Hatred, or just indifference? I don't think about it at all, only when I'm actually around them and I fucking despise every second of it

high iq and agree, but as emotions are more like a whipping cord hit and not a constant state of feeling, if it comes out it's also a affirmation of your existance and the context arround it. be a slave or be the master; if the result at the end is the affirmation of your own creation is as complex as everything on this life. the utilitarian approach is more so coming from a dialectical analysis and in my opinion hatred or whatever emotion it's only "good" if it's useful to achieve your purpose. and hatred in particular as a negative is dangerous cuz leds you into a loop of grief that only intensifies because of the power arround powerful emotions

Personally I’m not a big fan of utilitarianism(at least in the sense it’s most commonly discussed) but that’s a complex topic. However you said something interesting

it's only "good" if it's useful to achieve your purpose.

This would entail obviously that the purpose itself is a good because emotions(the emotion particularly in question being hatred) is merely a path to this “chief good.”

obviously purpose being the chief good the lower good of emotions(in the context of as supplying motivation to pave the path towards the chief good) is subordinate to it because this lower good is good in so far as a path towards the master good.

So instead if the motivation to walk the path towards that master good was for the sake of the master good itself I would argue that makes it more noble.
