One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections.
The bedding was hardly able to cover it and seemed ready to slide off any moment. His many legs, pitifully thin compared with the size of the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked.

"What's happened to me?" he thought.

Certa manhã, ao acordar de sonhos perturbadores, Gregor Samsa encontrou-se transformado em um inseto monstruoso em sua cama. Estava deitado de costas, sobre sua carapaça, e, ao levantar um pouco a cabeça, podia ver sua barriga marrom, ligeiramente abaulada e dividida em segmentos rígidos por arcos.
A roupa de cama mal conseguia cobri-lo e parecia prestes a escorregar a qualquer momento. Suas muitas pernas, lamentavelmente finas em comparação com o resto do corpo, agitavam-se desamparadamente enquanto ele olhava.

"O que aconteceu comigo?", pensou ele.
