The fact I've mistaken niceness for interest plays a role in why I'm terrified to ask a foid out.

The fact a foid pranked me plays a role too.

In a way, the foid who pranked me was an even worse scenario than the scenarios where I mistook niceness for interest. The prank wasn't a simple matter of my autism causing me to misinterpret her interest level. No, the pranker gave off genuine signs that even a neurotypical would have fallen for.

In 8th grade, an attractive popular foid spent a whole Friday pretending to be into me. In retrospect, I suppose I should have known there's no way an attractive popular foid would be into me.

But when a guy is 13, he's just glad to be getting attention from a popular hottie. That's where his thought process ends.

I put "number" in quotes because the number turned out to be fake.

When I called the number after school, yet got no answer, that was my first clue something was off. Then, come Monday, my whole grade found out I was pranked.

There was a kid 6 years younger than me down the street growing up. When he was in middle school, he fell victim to the prank from some girl in his grade.

He was devastated/humiliated at the time. Yet he apparently did a better job moving on than I did. He ended up developing a decent dating life. As for why he ended up developing a decent dating life, probably because he's NT. He was just fat as a kid; that's why he was a bullying target. He ended up losing the extra weight eventually.

But there are probably many instances like mine, where a dude who falls victim to that prank never fully recovers.

Interestingly, when I was a freshman in college, one of my best friends I made at college was a hot girl (We were never anything more than friends. But I digress)

She had a then 14 year old brother. Even though I never met him, she told me some stuff about him. He was super into emo songs (and was a bigtime misogynist) because no girl he had ever been into at the time liked him back.

One song in particular his sister mentioned he liked was Broken Man by Boys Like Girls. I liked that song as a teen...and still listen to it as a a man who's about to turn 34.

I recently found out he's now married (by now he'd be pushing 30, if not already 30)

Since I never knew him, I have no idea why/how he was able to move on. But apparently he was able to dig himself out of the rut he was in at 14. Meanwhile I've barely changed (in the context of getting foids at least) since I was 14.

In that case, it's highly unlikely she's pranking you. These types of pranks tend to be extremely short-lived.

On my last day of elementary school, a guy in my grade repeatedly asked me to marry him.

Now that was a funny joke (because we were both in on it). Even at that age, he was clearly straight as an arrow. It was obvious he wasn't really expressing romantic interest in me.

These types of jokes only become problematic when a foid does it to a guy who isn't in on the joke.

Thinking it had to be a prank, not only did he reject her; he tore into her too.

She cried. Turned out she was genuinely into him.
