I used to live in a small coastal town. Tropical storms were common during the monsoon season. Nobody really cared about them much. Whenever a warning was given out, people stayed indoors for a bit, then carried on with life. Trees got uprooted, property got damaged-but life moved on. It is part of life and everyone is used to it. But they always told me after a strong storm, stay away from areas with lots of big trees near the coast, especially those tall date palms and coconut trees.
After storms some palm/coconut trees don't fall right away they lean or are weakened internally. They might look stable but a gust of wind or even gravity can bring them crashing down unexpectedly. They might look fine but could fall any moment.
As a child, I didn't take that advice seriously. Why would I? Everyone around me seemed so unfazed by the storms so I made the mistake of going to such a area after a storm. And I had a near-death experience.A huge date palm fell just a few feet away from me. The trunk was easily twice my size. If I'd been just a little more to the right that would've been the end of me. I went to told my mum what happened and she was terrified. She never allowed me to go out without either my dad or her supervising me after that incident. Even now she always inquires where I am going when I go out.
