When a company gets big enough you have what you call phantom employees. like when you have someone working the exact same job at the exact same company at the exact same role for many years. They slip through the cracks and become phantom or ghost employees.
People forget they work there. Everyone below then assumes they are someone else's boss and everyone above thinks they are someone else's direct subordinates. Nobody goes to them to be given assignment and nobody gives them assignments.This usually happens when there's a migration, merger, rounds of layoffs, Changing office building etc. When the HR is not looking and managing people actively due to various reasons and paychecks at many MNCs are automated.
Like they were supposed to be layed off be promoted but just kind of got lost. Usually happens with Internal IT enterprise support guys or maintenance engineer who just kind of exist. Also happens in my field of Devops because they low touch jobs you essentially do nothing but still get paid. They coast by do nothing. Paid enough to stick around but not enough for someone to notice. I knew a guy like this at my previous company. To this day idk wtf he did but I would see him at the office evryd. Modern tracking systems and audit make this harder to spot but this absolutely still happens
