A sun dog (or mock sun/parhelion) is a bright, colorful spot of light appearing to the left, right, or both sides of the sun, formed by sunlight refracting through hexagonal ice crystals in high-altitude clouds, often seen in cold weather when the sun is low, creating "false suns" with reddish hues closest to the sun




I remember seeing one in grade 3
