That same italian surgeon has been talking about it for years and years. There is not a single proof it can be successfully done with the technology we have, the cripple guy who was supposed to volunteer backed out at last second, that has got to tell you something about the prospects of said surgery if Steven Hawking tier dude doesn't want to take the risk.
Also the monkeys and dog it's been tested on have died after the surgery in less than a day. Your body will literally attack the foreign object that has been latched on to it.
