You will have to use a walker/crutches for 3-4 months during distraction and consolidation. after roughly 4-5 months you may walk unasisted.
First 3 weeks are painful from what i have read but rest is not too much.
Yes its a year of recovery too full function so running, jumping skiing etc.
But If you want to get taller that seems like a quite small price
