Daily reminder that if you have a good degree you dont have to wageslave nearly as hard as average people

im an IT-sysadmin and nobody else here could do my job cuz lacking IQ, in reality i have nothing to do most of the time and just rot on disc or this god forsaken forum

meanwhile my colleagues need to do hard physical labour for 8 hours but still earn less ๐Ÿ˜‚

Most IT jobs are exactly like this. The idea of an engineer being. A guy in a dark room with dual monitors.Writing Python/JavaScript code. debugging until 3 AM, living off Red Bull or instant coffee is cope. People literally work just a few hours at max in IT jobs and LDAR the rest of the time

most of the stuff I learnt in my CS degree I don't even put them to use. CS degrees are mostly there to follow a structured path to learn and understand give you a high level overview om all the concepts in Computers. If you specifically want to study to become a coder, embedded systems engineer or sysadmin like OP and only do things specific to one IT role you can complete the entire syllabus in just a few months. This is one of the reasons I think CS degree isn't too important to become a great coder. I've known people who never went to uni but are still great coders but a CS degree helps for sure.

how do they remember what to do if shit hits the fan?

like the pros of working a lot are the reinforcement of the shit you learned due to constant repetition

in IT jobs it's not really repetitive like that A lot of the work is problem-solving on the spot, so you can't just rely on muscle memory-you've got to adapt every time something new breaks which can be both a pro or a con. It is one of the reasons IT unlike a finance role is interesting but it also can get frustrating sometimes

the skill u learn is problem solving itself, how to research, what to research etc.

combined with tech savvyness u get from using IT related devices a lot
