Basically, my friend is on the autism spectrum, and when we first met, due to his lack of social skills, I was the one who initiated our friendship. I emphasize that we have now been best friends for 11 years, and currently he is able to function well on his own. He is great and we are great friends, sadly I can't count on him to help with my personal stuff (since it would be too complex for him sadly) but i'm glad to help him with everything he needs.
As time went on in our lives and we entered adolescence, I helped him and gave him advice regarding the social aspects of his life so that he could make the most of it, improve, adapt, and not be marginalized by society.
I helped him build a stable group of friends (which we are both part of), I helped him have his first kiss, overcome his first heartbreak, and in general develop greater emotional intelligence in certain social and personal situations, as well as learn to regulate and manage them.
Autistic people deserve support, they deserve to be included, and they deserve to experience what everyone else does.
