Thread so good I had to bookmark it

i always get confused when people mention IQ, based off what? iq tests? academic performance? it’s so arbitrary lol

even if we are talking about iq tests, pattern recognition isn’t even a big cognitive trait that affects intellectual performance

Its all subjective cope, speaking as someone who used to try to cope with it. Iq is a extremely overrated trait past a certain threshold.

i’m more confused on the translation of “IQ”, if u want to do good at school, study more, if u want to make money, spending time trying to get money, if u want to discover something novel, spend more time in that field, if u want to become a creative artist of some sorts, start the trial and error process of making a lot of art

i have yet to see a definitive IQ measurement that correlates with cognitive limitations for a goal

The brutal truth, you cannot deny IQ

But it has no value if not used

Yes, i said subjective to summarise it, because iq is not a linear trait/attribute. There are so many different types of iq, for example someone could be mathematically intelligent, but socially unintelligent, emotionally intelligent (ironically women mog here) but lack logic. Autistic people tend to be strong logically but lack spatial and interpersonal iq.

As u see its way too complicated to just say “im high iq, you are low iq”

eh, my point is, i don’t think any measurement of IQ is useful in the pursuit of a goal, especially goals & fields that are highly empirical based, there is 2 parts of cognition and the brain, the hardware level (actual physical components in a given grain, these control working memory, neuron firing speed etc) and the software (the software to the hardware, functioning, interests etc), most of perceived intelligence people (issac newton, albert einstein etc) had relatively normal hardware, while having a highly obsessive nature of their work, of course there is exceptions, actual defective components brain wise does limit a person cognitively, but if u have a normal functioning brain, your not limited by cognition, the human brain was evolved for adaptation, meaning if ur obsessive enough or need something solved/done and your brain cares enough, it will do it, this applies to every field, when people are measured by category (mathematical intelligence, emotional intelligence) it’s just a result of neural plasticity, if ur a math genius you payed attention during school about math, same goes with emotional intelligence and such

if you want me to be honest, depending on your goal, probably not, the knowledge of this doesn’t really change much unless you figure out how to voluntarily induce curiosity /obsession, into something, u can try via information gap theory or prediction based curiosity generation, but u also need to care or be at least somewhat interested into your goal

Yeah, for me i only say its lifefuel because i have a tendency to easily get interested in topics and delve into them obsessively for hours to days to weeks to months

kind of, but to me it’s not exactly anything lifefuel because it’s just a more scientific way of saying “you can do anything you put your mind to”, but it’s pretty much what someone like newton did, he had sustained focus on problems and worked on them for 18 hours a day over years, when u think of it like that, his intellectual achievements seem less like genetics, in fact he had quite a poor working memory due to sleep deprivation, so he was at a big disadvantage while still being the greatest mind we’ve ever seen

To me that is lifefuel because unlike looks, which people wont admit is mostly luck/genetic, most people are comfortable with the idea that iq is completely luck/genetic, so the fact that “you can do anything you put your mind to” is lifefuel because were often told, “oh you are not smart enough for this or that”. Its like if a ltn actually could become chad through hard work.

yeah, a lot of theory is that curiosity and dopamine / emotional stuff plays a BIG part, like look at someone like da vinci, if u read anything he has made it’s clear that he is just a extremely curious person, we can even look at a modern day example of exceptional achievement, mr beast unironically, when u hear him talk about his obsession with youtube, you won’t be suprised why he has 500 million subscribers and has such a lead, but if u look at other topics that he talks about, he seems like a average dude, even sometimes ignorant or uninformed
