You're repeating a "college pays" narrative that has few truths to it. You're hinging on WHY and for WHOM it pays, not just the average. Only ~35% of bachelor’s holders hit $100k+ mid-career, and 12% earn under $40k which is barely above high school medians. The gay “lifetime earnings” stat hides that variance. Besides tuition has skyrocketed 180% from 1980, you'd make more skipping college and investing $100k+ elsewhere.

The classes you take in high school are by default so nobody is really taking "harder classes", if you're arguing electives then that's different. Fact of the matter is that 90% of kids in school aren't partying Chads, they're just normies, and the average normie will do what they're told and pass their classes for the sake of appealing to the system and their slave parents.
