A last act that was to settle once and for all the Polish question. “When I learned of the Warsaw uprising,” Himmler told a group of local Wehrmacht and training school leaders, “I went immediately to see the Führer and I told him: "My Führer, the moment is unfortunate. But historically speaking, what the Poles are doing is a windfall. We can put an end to it in five or six weeks. After that, Warsaw, the capital, the head, the spirit incarnate of this people of sixteen or seventeen millions, of this people who has for 700 years barred our road to the East, who has constantly been in our way since the first battle of Tannenberg, will be annihilated. Then the Polish problem, a historic problem if ever there was, will have been resolved for our children and all who come after us, and will no longer be even the smallest problem for us"
