This is literally exactly what has happened in the west. The west use to OWN the entire world but then democracy became the standard and the west started slowly losing everything because the voters aren't disciplined enough to care about the big picture, instead choosing to vote away all the responsibilities while also voting to themselves unlimited entitlement. Democracy is a failed system.
