No, this is absolutely not true. Hitler was definitely a true believer in his cause. You have to remember that he was a pan-German nationalist that hated the Austro-Hungarian empire and wanted all the Germans united under one reich that would be a world superpower since he was a little boy. When he was a soldier in WW1 he deliberately joined the Bavarian army instead of the Austrian one. When he was wounded in a gas attack and heard Germany lost the war after recovering in the hospital he started going insane and screaming at the other soldiers because he felt like they failed Germany.

He was an obsessive reader of books on eugenics and world history, and was convinced that if he didn't go to war Germany was doomed in the long-term because he believed in the shrinking markets theory. He probably did go a bit mad with power and became delusional after he got Memel and the Sudetenland (and then Czechoslovakia) through implicit threats of war - which would explain why he decided to gamble on Poland, but his fanatical devotion to German nationalism was something he had his entire life.
