I am a 20 year old man, 5'10 and just 67.5kg.

I physically appear slightly chubby, I'm 20% body fat (maybe even slightly more).

1000002318

30th percentile based on my weight (actually slightly less because this is for 19yr olds) but I still appear skinnyfat and completely undefined. Unless I'm just overestimating my bf%.

How can one have virtually 0 muscle on their body?

Are you lazy? Do you workout? If yes, do you workout correctly? I have never seen a skinnyfat person who was actually physically active.

Everyone has muscle. You’re just not muscular. Big difference.

Dude I need your opinion on this.

In the past several years (20 now), I have easily worked out for 1-1.5 years on-and-off.

Watched all the tutorials, had a good diet (I was mostly in a slight deficit/at maintenance but still) but barely looked like I lifted at all.

Also there were times were I easily trained for 4+ months consistently.

Today I went back to the gym, I let myself go over the past few months and I gained a bunch of weight. I'd actually gained some strength, I was completing incline dumbbell bench reps with 16kg dumbbells so I felt pretty good.

Then I see some 16yr old kid start shoulder pressing 16kg dumbbells, I just got up off my ass and left the gym.

I have accepted that I just have shitty muscle-building genetics, the good news is that I have a good face under my bodyfat (20% body fat right now).

Does my reaction make logical sense? Surely after all that time without results, any sane person would just give up.

How the fuck so you know he’s 16 yo?

So you stop working on yourself because someone was better than you? Don’t you know he was most likely weaker than you when he first started? So what if someone is better, you will never be the best, it’s about being better than your past self, you have to compete with yourself, not with other people. Be better than you were yesterday

If you don’t have fun working out, don’t do it, because it’s just torture if you don’t enjoy it. I enjoy it, it makes me feel good, but if you don’t feel good, it makes me feel something and i like that, but for you it’s different. If you say you have a good face, then just have a good diet, low carb and low sugar in order to make your facial bones more visible (only if you really have good bones)

Next time someone is better than you in something you wanna be good at, try looking up to him and take him as role model, instead of feeling humiliated and insecure. Instead of thinking "Oh no he is better, i hate myself“, try thinking "I can learn from him and become like him“. Put your ego aside, because it only holds you back

No man, it's just that I have such a long history of working out and absolutely nothing to show for it.

I agree, none of my complaining is necessary or serves a practical purpose but I feel like an actual clown each time I walk in there. I feel like I embarrass myself each time I try to lift.

Maybe you're right. My primary goal for a while was to simply stay lean and feel better about myself, but it feels like it's all been in vain.

Sure I could still go for a practical purpose, but my motivation feels devoid of any substance.

Refer to my other reply, it's not so much about ego as it is genuine embarrassment.

I actually don't have a problem with him being stronger than me at all, good on him for challenging himself and getting results.

But how is it embarassing? I can guarantee you, nobody who has a good built looks down on you if you arent strong or jacked, you can be very sure about that. People who like themselves are not arrogant at all. If anyone judges you, it’s someone who is lower than you or at best on the same level as you.

But if you are insecure it’s ok, you can start by working out at home. You can achieve a lot with home workout if you do it right, just buy some weights and do push ups and so on, it will get you in shape well enough for you to feel confident enough to step into a gym without feeling mogged too hard

I think you're reading into it, I was simply being honest about how I felt. Nothing more than a personal reflection, if you think that something needs to be fixed that is fine.

Next time I'll just keep it to myself. I do agree that it was pretty gay to walk alone into a gym and barely lift anything though, gotta be less emotionally reactive and more decisive in future.

Just trying to help a brother out, i was in your position once and i felt the same, but i realized there is no need to be ashamed, you are there because you want to become better, people respect that, the gym is full with people who felt fat and ugly but worked to change that and we’re successful with it
