It’s not required at all in Islam. I used to think so as well, but it’s just a misconception. It’s technically sunnah (way of the prophet) but even that term isn’t right since it’s said he was born that way and not circumcised; so in a way it isn’t really sunnah either as he didn’t get circumcised.
