Start with a basic understanding of the rise of prominent civilizations throughout the different ages (world history). Next learn about the Italian Renaissance. After that focus on the industrial revolution. Then seek a deep understanding of the history of wherever you happen to be from. Then go back and glean a general understanding of the history of philosophy (I'd recommend the book Sophie's world). A history of literature is the next thing to focus on.

After that go back and broaden your understanding of all of this, but focusing on the finer details pertaining to your own specific interests.
