Honour means the quality of knowing and doing what is morally right. In reference to the bushido (codex) If a samurai makes a mistake, he should honor his own name by committing suicide.

How I interpret the phrase ‘honour killed the samurai’, may be different to how you interpret it. There is no objective standard for morality, which means the samurai decided what his own moral value-code should be. By committing suicide, the samurai repent for being untrue to his own values and principles.

If you believe there is something morally right, you have honour. If your behaviour contradicts what you think is morally right you have no honour. If you have no honour you have no life worth living.

By losing your honour you’ve bended on your moral principles and conformed to the will of others. If you conform you have no life worth living and should commit suicide like the samurais.

My biggest struggle in life is doing what I want to do, contrary to what others expect of me. The reason the phrase hold so much meaning to me is, If I conform I may as well just be dead, by taking my own life (as per the samurais).
