Just the way how companies owning data centers to host their stuff became a thing of the past when AWS came out. I think personal gaming PCs and consoles will become a thing of the past aswell. It is happening right before our eyes. Console prices going up, GPU going up, SSD going up. Evrything is unaffordable rn. and at the same time so many data centers are being built, evrything is turning into a subscription.


And this trend has 0 signs of slowing down and at some point the price of the hardware will just become too much and then these companies will be like You know what you can just stream the games from our data centers instead of fighting us for hardware everytime, for $10 dollars a month now I know some niggas will surely talk about muh latency. Get with the times bro. This isn't 2019-20. Google stadia days. Cloud gaming has gotten very very good because of the advancements in networking. Wi-Fi 6E and 7 with multi link ops, modern AV1 codecs for efficiency. And modern networking standards and routers have made latency less and less of an issue. Now I'm sure rich niggas and eSports niggas will still buy PCs but the average gamer will probably have a 15-20$ subscription a few years down the line. But maybe I'm wrong. Im just a casual gamer and mostly a tech enthusiast and software dev so maybe I don't understand the sentiments of gamers but the writing is on the wall imo

But 2700 usd is really at the top end. No one is forcing the average gamer to shell out 4 figures for a PC

Not obsolete just rare like how most people don’t own a high end dedicated camera because their phone does the job. The dedicated cameras still exist and enthusiasts still buy them but they’ve become a niche compared to the mainstream.

It's already happening tho GeForce Ultimate subscriptions are steadily increasing and I think the biggest factor will eventually be economics If the cost of owning and upgrading a gaming PC keeps rising while cloud subscriptions stay affordable, market forces will push more people toward it. .

people don't necessarily switch because they prefer the new model they switch because the old model becomes increasingly expensive and inconvenient

Im specific talking about gaming PCs. General purpose PCs will exist. But I imagine tier system with mass market cloud gaming for casuals. And a Highly efficient custom ASIC with fixed function video decoder like stream deck descendants that are Cheap and easy to produce for 90% of gamers and at the top gaming pcs that people will own for the rich and competitive gamer

stadia would’ve worked if it served as a alternate to games where progress transferred rather than buying the game fully and it serving as an alternate if you can’t plug and play a console

im not too deep into or up to date with geforcenow but i remembered how games would rotate by cycle each by each which is probably why it didn’t succeed

it’s probably way different now and way more flexible with the library options but the core problem still exists for a lot of people

most people into that shit still hate the idea of paying monthly just to access something they already bought or might buy later only to lose it if the service dies or their sub runs out (happened to stadia)

ownership feels safer even if its just a license buried in some eula nobody reads

cloud streaming works great as a backup when youre traveling or your plug in play console isn’t with you but as the main way to play it never rlly clicked for the majority

people want that permanent place in their library that says this is mine even if its not truly theirs

same reason a lot of pure subscription game services struggle outside of the big ones with huge catalogs and constant new releases

until cloud can guarantee your saves and progress stay yours forever and the games dont vanish overnight most people are gonna keep treating it as a temporary fix instead of the real deal

Sure you can buy the 5090 ti for 3k… but nobody’s forcing you.

You can easily get a new / used prebuilt for a cheap price right now.
If this prebuilt has the specs to work now, then that same hardware will work in 10 even 20 years.
Quality of games isn’t getting much better only our hardware is.
In fact, i think it will only get cheaper to game because of this.
Technology advances and less powerful items naturally become cheaper - items that are more than enough for high quality games.
