And to answer your question @pfl, it's because white people were, especially in the states, very particular about who they consider white. For instance spanish people and italians were both considered unwhite therefore they were shunned by the British, french, german etc ruling class and formed their own distinct cultural identities. That is why today you still see people claiming to be italian and even irish (because irish were looked down upon as well despite being white) but you don't see anyone honking their horn about their german or british heritage.

Now consider a half-caste. Obviously they're going to be shunned by all white people and naturally fall into the group of black people and their culture.
