How are you supposed to improve social skills if you have no friends?

It sounds exactly like "you need work experience to work". It is a vicious repeating cycle.

You have no social skills ----> You can't make friends to "practice" social skills with

You have no friends ----> You can't "practice" social skills and thus you don't have them

People you play sports with, colleagues, ppl you study with at school.

Shared activities and the bonding that comes from that leads to friendship. you don't really need social skills for that.

Just enough exposure.

I think you'd call these people "acquaintances".

You can't make friends only through incidental exposure, you need to spend time deliberately, outside of those activities which turned you into acquaintances, and for this to work you need to be NT and have social skills to converse.
