How can I mew / widen pallete without getting a front teeth gap?

Whenever I new and don’t wear my retainer I get a massive tooth gap, looks awful. Have tried putting a rubber band keeping the 2 teeth together but I’m pretty sure that limits the pallete from widening. Any ideas?
