Financial inequality was a bigger problem when a large portion of the population was literally starving.

In a developed country nowadays, even if you live on minimum wage you can still live fairly comfortably compared to what life was like as an 1800’s peasant. As long as most of the population has all of their minimum needs met, they won’t care about financial equality.

As long as you have a place to live, food to eat and some form of leisure, you can just cope and say:
“Money doesn’t bring happiness”
“Besides one day I could become rich, who knows”

That’s what 99% of the population does.
Nobody cares about communism anymore.

Now the main human need that isn’t being met is that of intimacy and now, what causes this inequality isn’t something physical that can be obtained so easily. It’s your genes.

That is pretty accurate, but I think you should have mentioned the Mujahideens rather than Taliban who came in much later. I think USSR's interests in Afghanistan went beyond just supporting the govt though, for one it was the gateway to the middle east, a very fickle region in the throes of the proxy wars since the oil embargo of 1973, and a buffer state abutting American satellite states (albeit Iran had been obliterated after the then recent revolution in 1979 and I am pretty sure KGB had huge intervention in it since Shah Pahlavi was an American stooge), the other being Pakistan.
