How did society get trapped into the mindset that we need to shampoo our hair everyday?

I still 'wash' my hair in the shower everyday, and I scrub my scalp everyday with my fingertips. And I will use a little conditioner everyday, but that is just for conditioning, not for cleaning. But I now only shampoo twice a week. I used to shampoo everyday, and as best as I knew that was the societal norm.
How did society get trapped into the mindset that humans need to shampoo everyday? Was it just commercial programming? Or was there some big picture motivation that I am missing?

Thought it was slowly fixing. I’ve seen people do more conditioning then shampooing

it says on the bottle to only use it 1-2x a week
normies are just mentally challenged and think more = better

At least I never bought into the "rinse and repeat" mantra that was commonly promoted in Ads 30+ years ago. Many people used to shampoo their hair twice because of this advertising.

"Rinse and repeat" is an idiom originating from shampoo bottle instructions ("lather, rinse, repeat") used to describe a repetitive cycle or the act of doing something again in the same way. In a literal context, it refers to washing hair twice, as the first wash often removes oils that inhibit lathering, while the second wash provides the desired suds and cleaning effect; however, for many hair types, a single wash is sufficient.

Figuratively, the phrase is used humorously or sarcastically to point out endless loops, slavish adherence to instructions without critical thought, or the redundancy of a process. It has become a common cultural reference in computer science (known as the "shampoo algorithm") and general conversation to denote iterative actions.

doesnt it smell bad if you don't shampoo?
