It's always been the idea that women's looks matter, but a man could be butt ugly and still be successful with women. The only thing that matters is money and inward qualities for men. It also comes from porn. You have traditionally unattractive guys like Ron Jeremy who was one of the most famous male pornstars and got to slay Stacies.

Also, women are more likely to settle for an unattractive man if he brings a certain amount of money or status to the table. When women couldn't work, they needed a man to provide. So they would settle for a man who was ugly if he had a decent paying job. And even today, money matters less. But, once you start to move into the 6 figure range and even the millionaire range, money will certainly help you. You have sugar baby dating sites and the women on their might be willing to date and have sex with an ugly man if he can provide her with a certain lifestyle like trips to Paris or shopping trips in L.A. or New York City. Or a high powered politician who's older will be able to attract much younger women with his status.
