How did your parents explain what gays were to you?

When I was a kid, "gay" was being thrown around as an insult at school, and I didn't know what it meant.

So I asked my parents. They just told me "it's a man that wants to be a woman"

Completely wrong definition, but I guess it's a decent answer to give to a child. The concept of trans didn't even exist at the time, so I guess the term gay applied there too.

I was mainly taught by religion as my mother was a jehovahs witness I'd guess, idk if I exactly discussed it with them but knew it was bad

They never explained what gays are, because back when I was a kid there were no gays in Romania, absolutely no mention of them in books, magazines, newspapers, movies, on TV, radio, etc...Also never heard anyone mention them in real life, or use the word gay, homosexual, etc.
