How do I fix toenail fungus

I barely wear socks in my home , wash my feet each time I shower and dont spend half the day in town wearing shoes. Why then do I have toenail fungus. I used to only have it on one nail but it started spreading to the others this summer even thought for 2 years before that it stayed on one nail.
What is causing it to grow and what could I do to kill the fungus?
